Hey fellow green DIYers!
I’ve been on a mission to make my home as eco-friendly as possible, and my latest project is repainting the ceilings. I’ve had my fair share of battles with runs and sags in the past, and I’m determined to find a natural paint solution that doesn’t compromise on performance.
I’ve tried a couple of eco-friendly paints before, like Earthborn’s Claypaint and Auro’s Natural Paint, both of which have been great for walls but I’m a bit hesitant about their performance on ceilings. I’m curious if anyone has experience with these or other brands specifically for ceiling applications? I’m looking for something that’s easy to apply, dries quickly, and of course, is kind to our planet.
Also, I’m wondering about surface compatibility. My ceilings are a mix of plaster and drywall – has anyone found a natural paint that works well on both without requiring a primer? And what about environmental considerations – are there any brands that stand out for their sustainable practices or ingredients?
I’d love to hear your experiences and recommendations. What’s worked (or hasn’t worked) for you when painting ceilings with eco-friendly paints? Let’s share our tips and tricks to make our homes greener, one ceiling at a time!
Hey @EcoPainter88, I’ve been down the eco-friendly paint road myself and found BioShield’s Aqua Resin Flat to be a game-changer for ceilings. It’s water-based, low VOC, and has a consistency that really minimizes runs and sags. Plus, it dries to a beautiful matte finish that’s perfect for ceilings. I used it on both plaster and drywall without any primer and it adhered beautifully. Definitely worth checking out!

Thanks @GreenThumb99! I’ve heard of BioShield but haven’t tried their Aqua Resin Flat yet. How many coats did you need for full coverage? And did you notice any difference in application between the plaster and drywall areas?

@EcoPainter88, I did two coats for full coverage, but the first coat already looked pretty good. I didn’t notice any significant difference in application between plaster and drywall, which was a relief. The paint’s consistency really helps it spread evenly, reducing the chance of runs.

I’ve used Ecos Organic Paint for my ceilings and was pleasantly surprised by its performance. It’s got a nice thick consistency that helps prevent sags, and it’s made with natural ingredients. The only downside is it takes a bit longer to dry compared to some other paints, but the finish is worth the wait. Plus, their commitment to sustainability is impressive.

@LeafLover23, thanks for the recommendation! How long did it take for the Ecos paint to dry between coats? And did you need to use a primer on any of your surfaces?

@EcoPainter88, it took about 4-6 hours to dry between coats, depending on the humidity. I didn’t use a primer on any of my surfaces, and the paint adhered well to both plaster and drywall. Just make sure the surface is clean and dry before you start painting.

For those concerned about environmental impact, Lullaby Paints is another great option. They’re zero VOC and made with natural ingredients. @NatureNerd56, Lullaby Paints sound fantastic, especially the eco-friendly packaging. How many coats did you need, and did you encounter any issues with the paint’s consistency?

@EcoPainter88, two coats were sufficient for full coverage. The paint’s consistency was perfect – not too thick, not too runny. It made application a breeze, and I didn’t have to worry about drips or sags. Definitely recommend giving it a try!

I’ve also tried Ecos Organic Paint for a project last year and was really impressed. The thickness definitely helps with the sags, and the finish is smooth. I didn’t mind the drying time since I planned for it. Their sustainability efforts are a big plus for me too.
Interesting to hear about Ecos Organic Paint. I’ve been using Biofa’s Natural Paint for ceilings and it’s been a game changer. It’s super easy to apply and dries faster than most eco-friendly paints I’ve tried. Plus, it sticks well to both plaster and drywall without needing a primer.
I had a different experience with Ecos Organic Paint. Found it a bit too thick for my liking, made it hard to get an even coat. Switched to Green Planet Paints and haven’t looked back. It’s thinner, dries quickly, and the coverage is great. Their eco-credentials are solid too.

Has anyone tried Lullaby Paints for ceilings? I used it for my baby’s nursery and loved the zero VOC aspect. Wondering if it holds up on ceilings as well as it did on walls. The color options are a bit limited, but the quality seems top-notch.
