How to prepare wooden floors for eco-paint application?

Hey everyone! I’m in the middle of giving my old wooden floors a new lease on life with some eco-friendly paint. I’ve been using Earthborn Paints for a while now, and I’m really impressed with their low VOC content and the fact they’re made from natural ingredients. But before I dive into painting, I want to make sure I’m prepping my floors correctly to get the best finish and longevity out of the paint.

I’ve already sanded the floors to remove the old finish and any imperfections, which I know is crucial for a smooth application. I’m considering using a natural wood primer to ensure the paint adheres well, but I’m curious about what others have used. Have any of you tried Auro Natural Wood Primer or something similar? How did it work with your eco-paint?

Also, I’m a bit torn on whether to use a natural wax or a water-based sealant after painting. I’ve heard wax can give a beautiful, natural finish but might require more maintenance. On the other hand, a water-based sealant might be more durable but less eco-friendly. What’s your experience with post-paint treatments on wooden floors?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and any tips you might have for ensuring a successful eco-paint application on wooden floors!

Hey @GreenThumbJenny, great choice going with Earthborn Paints! I’ve used Auro Natural Wood Primer on my floors and it worked wonders. It’s really important to use a primer that’s compatible with eco-paints to ensure the best adhesion and finish. After painting, I went with a natural wax for that authentic, warm look. Yes, it does require a bit more maintenance, but the finish is unbeatable. Just make sure to apply thin, even coats of both the primer and paint for the best results.

I’m also in the process of painting my wooden floors with eco-friendly paint! I haven’t decided on a primer yet, so I’m curious to see what others recommend. @EcoWarriorDave, how often do you find yourself needing to reapply the natural wax?

Thanks for the advice, @EcoWarriorDave! I think I’ll give the Auro Natural Wood Primer a try. I’m leaning towards the natural wax too for that authentic finish. How long did you wait between applying the paint and the wax?

I went with a water-based sealant after painting my floors with Earthborn Paints. It’s been a couple of years now, and the floors still look great with minimal maintenance. I was worried about the eco-friendliness at first, but I found a brand that’s low in VOCs and made from sustainable materials. It might be worth considering if you’re looking for something more durable.

@LeafyLarry, that’s good to know! Could you share the brand of the water-based sealant you used? I’m definitely interested in exploring all my options.

@GreenThumbJenny, I waited about a week before applying the natural wax. It’s crucial to make sure the paint is completely dry to avoid any issues. As for maintenance, I reapply the wax once a year, but it really depends on the traffic in the area. High traffic zones might need a bit more attention.

@GreenThumbJenny, I used EcoSeal for my floors. It’s been fantastic, and I haven’t had any issues with it. It’s also easy to apply, which is a bonus. Definitely worth checking out if durability is a priority for you.

I’ve been down the eco-paint road before and I gotta say, using a natural wood primer is a game changer. I used Auro Natural Wood Primer with my eco-paint and the difference in adhesion and finish was night and day. As for the finish, I lean towards water-based sealants. They might not have the same warm look as wax, but the durability is worth it for me. Plus, there are some pretty eco-friendly options out there now that don’t compromise on performance.

I’m all about that natural wax finish too! It does take a bit more elbow grease to maintain, but the depth and warmth it adds to the wood is unmatched. I haven’t tried Auro Natural Wood Primer yet, but I’ve heard good things. I usually go with a different brand, but the key is definitely in the prep work. Sanding well and choosing the right primer makes all the difference. Have you considered the room’s usage when deciding between wax and sealant? High traffic areas might benefit more from the durability of a sealant.

I’ve used Auro Natural Wood Primer before and it worked great with my eco-paint. It really helped the paint stick better and gave a nice, even finish. As for the wax, I find myself reapplying it about once a year, but it really depends on the traffic in the room. High traffic areas might need it more often.

I went with a water-based sealant after painting my floors and haven’t looked back. It’s been super durable and easy to clean. I was worried about it not being eco-friendly enough, but I found a brand that’s low VOC and made from natural ingredients. It’s a good middle ground if you’re worried about maintenance.

I haven’t tried Auro, but I used a different natural wood primer and it was a disaster. The paint started peeling after a few months. I think it really depends on the specific products and how they interact. Maybe do a small test area first before committing to the whole floor.

Natural wax does require more maintenance, but I think the finish is worth it. It gives the floors a warm, natural look that you just can’t get with sealants. I reapply mine every six months, but I enjoy the process. It’s kind of therapeutic, actually.

I’m curious about the sanding process. Did you use a specific grit that worked best for preparing the floors for eco-paint? I’m about to start sanding mine and want to make sure I get it right. Also, did you notice any difference in how the paint adhered based on the sanding?

I’ve used Auro Natural Wood Primer before with Earthborn Paints, and it worked like a charm. The primer really helped the paint stick better and gave a more even finish. I didn’t go for any sealant afterwards, though. Just the paint and primer combo has held up pretty well over the years. Maybe it’s worth a shot if you’re looking for something straightforward.

I’m all about that wax finish. Sure, it might need a bit more elbow grease to maintain, but the look and feel it gives to the floors are unmatched. I used a natural beeswax after painting, and it’s been great. It does require reapplication every so often, but I find the process quite therapeutic, to be honest.

I went the water-based sealant route too, and I haven’t looked back. Found a brand that’s eco-friendly and durable. It’s been a couple of years, and my floors still look as good as new. I was initially worried about the environmental impact, but knowing it’s low in VOCs and made from sustainable materials put my mind at ease.

Has anyone tried mixing their own natural sealant? I’ve been experimenting with linseed oil and beeswax. It’s a bit of a process, but the results are pretty satisfying. Plus, it’s as eco-friendly as it gets. Just wondering if anyone else has gone down this DIY path and what your experiences have been.

I think the key is in the prep work. You’ve already sanded, which is great. I’d recommend going over the floors with a tack cloth to remove any dust before applying the primer. It makes a huge difference in the final look. As for sealants, I lean towards water-based for ease of maintenance, but I understand the appeal of natural waxes too.
