Has anyone tried using natural pigments for exterior house paint? How did it hold up?

Hey fellow green living enthusiasts! :herb: I’ve been diving deep into the world of natural paints for my latest home renovation project, and I’m particularly curious about using natural pigments for exterior house paint. I’ve had some great experiences with Earthborn Paints for interiors, especially their claypaint, which has a beautiful matte finish and is breathable, perfect for old stone walls. But the exterior is a whole different ball game, isn’t it?

I’m considering trying out Auro Natural Paints for the exterior, as I’ve heard their natural pigments are not only vibrant but also durable against weather conditions. Has anyone here taken the plunge with natural pigments outside? I’m especially interested in how they hold up against UV exposure and rain over time. Did you find any particular brand or type that stood out for its durability and color retention?

Also, I’m curious about surface preparation. Did you need to do anything special to ensure the paint adhered well and lasted longer? Any tips or lessons learned would be incredibly helpful as I plan my project. Let’s share our experiences and help each other make more eco-friendly choices for our homes! :house_with_garden::green_heart:

I’ve used Auro Natural Paints for my garden shed, and I must say, the color vibrancy is impressive! It’s been two years, and the paint still looks fresh. However, I did notice some fading on the side that gets the most sun. Maybe consider a UV protective coating?

@GreenThumbGary Thanks for sharing! A UV protective coating sounds like a great idea. Did you apply it yourself, or did you have it professionally done? Also, was there any specific brand of UV coating you’d recommend?

I tried making my own natural paint with clay and natural pigments for my fence. It was a fun project, but honestly, it didn’t hold up well against the rain. I’m thinking of trying Earthborn Paints next time. Has anyone used their exterior range?

Has anyone tried mixing different natural pigments to create custom colors for exterior paint? I’m thinking of experimenting but worried about how it might affect the paint’s durability.

@RainbowRider That sounds like a fascinating project! I haven’t tried mixing pigments myself, but I’d love to hear how it goes. Maybe start with a small test area to see how it holds up?

I’ve been using Biofa Natural Paints for my exterior walls, and I’m really happy with the results. The colors have stayed vibrant, and it’s been over three years now. The key for me was proper surface preparation. I made sure to clean and prime the walls thoroughly before applying the paint.

I’ve been using Earthborn Paints for both interior and exterior projects for a couple of years now. Their exterior paint has held up surprisingly well against the elements. I did notice a bit of fading on the south-facing side of my house after a year, but it’s minimal. I think the key is in the preparation. I made sure to clean and prime the surfaces properly before applying the paint. Maybe that’s something to consider for better longevity.

Interesting to hear about Auro Natural Paints. I’ve been on the fence about trying natural pigments for my exterior walls, mainly because of concerns about durability. The UV protective coating idea sounds like a good tip. Has anyone tried mixing their own natural pigments? I’m curious about the process and if it’s cost-effective compared to buying pre-made natural paints.

I tried making my own natural paint once, using lime and natural pigments for a small exterior wall. The color was beautiful, but it didn’t last long. I think I messed up the lime to pigment ratio. It’s definitely a learning process. For my next attempt, I’m considering adding a natural binder to see if it improves durability. Anyone else experimented with DIY natural paints?

I’ve heard good things about Auro Natural Paints too, especially their eco credentials. But I’m curious about the coverage. How many coats did you need for your garden shed? I’m planning to paint my wooden fence and wondering if natural paints require more coats than conventional ones to get a solid color.

Coverage can be a bit tricky with natural paints. I used Earthborn Paints for my fence and needed three coats for an even finish. It’s more work, but the environmental benefits and the non-toxic aspect make it worth it for me. Plus, the color looks more natural, which I love. Has anyone found a natural paint that offers better coverage with fewer coats?

I’ve been researching natural paints for my upcoming exterior project and came across Biofa. They claim their products are highly durable and eco-friendly. Has anyone tried them? I’m particularly interested in their resistance to mold and algae, which is a big issue in my area. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated before I make a decision.

I’ve actually used Earthborn Paints for my exterior walls last summer. The color is still vibrant, and it’s holding up pretty well against the sun and rain. I did make sure to prep the surface properly though, cleaning it thoroughly and applying a primer. It was a bit of work, but definitely worth it for the eco-friendly aspect and the finish.

That’s interesting to hear about Earthborn Paints. I’ve been on the fence about trying natural paints outside because of durability concerns. Did you notice any fading or peeling after a season? Also, how does the cost compare to conventional exterior paints? I’m all for going green, but budget is a bit tight right now.

I’ve been curious about Biofa Natural Paints too. It’s great to hear they’ve held up well for you. Did you notice any fading or peeling in areas that get a lot of sun? I’m trying to figure out if I need to add some extra UV protection or if the paint alone will do the trick.

That’s awesome to hear about Biofa. I’ve been on the fence about switching to natural paints for my exterior because I’m worried about the durability. How often do you find yourself needing to touch up or repaint areas? I’m trying to gauge the maintenance level compared to traditional paints.

I’ve been using Auro Natural Paints for a couple of years now, and I’ve been pretty impressed. The color has stayed vibrant, and it’s handled the rain and sun better than I expected. I did make sure to prep the surface really well, though. I think that’s key no matter what paint you use.
