Has anyone tried using natural clay paint in a bathroom? How does it hold up against moisture?

Hey everyone! I’ve been diving deep into the world of natural paints for my home renovation project, and I’m particularly intrigued by the idea of using natural clay paint in my bathroom. I’ve already experimented with lime wash in the living room and milk paint for some furniture, and I’m loving the eco-friendly vibes and the unique textures they bring. But the bathroom is a whole different beast, right? Moisture, humidity, and all that jazz.

I’m eyeing this brand called Earth Pigments for their natural clay paint. They claim it’s breathable, which sounds perfect for preventing mold, but I’m curious about its durability in such a wet environment. Has anyone here taken the plunge and used natural clay paint in their bathroom? How did it hold up over time? Did you need to apply any special sealants or treatments to protect it from moisture?

Also, I’m wondering about the application process. Was it straightforward, or did you encounter any challenges, especially with the unique texture of clay paint? Any tips or tricks for a fellow DIYer looking to make their bathroom a bit more eco-friendly?

Looking forward to hearing your experiences and any advice you might have. Let’s make our homes not just beautiful, but sustainable too!

Hey @EcoPainter88, I’ve used Earth Pigments natural clay paint in my bathroom about a year ago, and I must say, it’s holding up pretty well against moisture. The breathability factor is real; I haven’t seen any mold issues, which is a huge plus. However, I did apply a natural beeswax sealant to add an extra layer of protection. It did change the finish slightly, giving it a more matte look, but I actually prefer it. Application was a bit tricky at first due to the texture, but once you get the hang of it, it’s quite rewarding. Definitely recommend giving it a try!

Thanks @GreenThumb99! That’s really helpful to know. I was a bit worried about the texture, but it sounds like it’s manageable with a bit of practice. Did you find that the beeswax sealant affected the paint’s breathability at all?

@EcoPainter88, I was concerned about that too, but from what I’ve observed, the breathability hasn’t been significantly impacted. The key is to apply a thin, even layer of beeswax. It’s been a year, and the walls are still doing great, no moisture issues or mold. Just make sure to let the paint cure fully before applying the sealant!

I haven’t tried Earth Pigments, but I used another brand of natural clay paint in my bathroom, and it was a disaster. The color faded significantly within months, and there were spots where the paint just peeled off. Maybe it was the brand or my application technique, but it’s made me hesitant to try again. Anyone else had a similar experience?

Oh no, @SunnyDaysAhead, that sounds frustrating! Do you remember the brand you used? It might help others avoid similar issues. Also, did you use any kind of sealant or protective coating?

@EcoPainter88, it was Nature’s Hue. I didn’t use a sealant, thinking the paint’s natural properties would be enough. Maybe that was my mistake. I’m considering giving it another go with a different brand and definitely using a sealant this time. Any recommendations?

I love the idea of using natural clay paint in the bathroom! I’ve been looking for more sustainable options for my home. Does anyone know if Earth Pigments or similar brands offer a wide range of colors? I’m aiming for a specific shade to match my bathroom tiles.

@DIYQueen, Earth Pigments has a pretty decent range of colors, but they’re all natural tones, so if you’re looking for something very specific, you might need to mix colors or look into custom options. I found their customer service really helpful when I had questions about color matching. Maybe reach out to them with your tile color for advice?

I’ve been curious about natural clay paint too, especially for areas like the bathroom where moisture is a concern. It’s great to hear that @EcoPainter88 had a positive experience with Earth Pigments. I wonder though, how does the beeswax sealant affect the paint’s breathability? I’ve read that one of the main advantages of clay paint is its ability to regulate humidity by absorbing and releasing moisture. Does adding a sealant counteract that benefit?

That’s interesting about the beeswax sealant changing the finish. I’ve been looking into natural finishes for my own projects and was considering a linseed oil treatment for a similar purpose. Has anyone tried combining natural clay paint with linseed oil? I’m curious if it offers better moisture protection without altering the paint’s appearance too much. Also, how does the application process compare between beeswax and linseed oil?

I’m all for making homes more sustainable, but I’m a bit skeptical about the durability of natural paints in high-moisture areas. @EcoPainter88’s experience is encouraging, but I wonder about long-term performance. Has anyone had their natural clay paint in a bathroom for several years? I’d love to hear about any maintenance tips or if you’ve had to reapply the paint or sealant over time. Also, how does the cost compare to traditional bathroom paints when considering longevity and maintenance?

That’s a bummer to hear about your experience. I’ve been considering natural clay paint for my bathroom too, but now I’m second-guessing. Did you try reaching out to the brand for advice or maybe a refund? Sometimes they have tips or might acknowledge a bad batch. It’s frustrating when eco-friendly options don’t hold up as promised.

I had a similar issue with a different brand of natural paint in my kitchen. It’s tough because you want to make sustainable choices, but not at the expense of having to repaint every year. Maybe there’s a specific type of sealant that works well with natural clay paints to prevent fading and peeling? I’m curious if anyone has found a good combo that lasts.

I’ve actually used Earth Pigments in my bathroom, and it’s been holding up surprisingly well. The key is proper ventilation. I didn’t use any special sealants, just made sure the room doesn’t stay damp for too long. As for colors, they have a decent range, but it’s more about the natural tones. If you’re looking for a specific shade, you might need to mix colors or accept a close match.

Natural clay paint sounds cool, but I’m skeptical about its durability in a bathroom. I went with a more traditional eco-friendly paint that’s specifically formulated for high moisture areas. It might not have the same charm, but it’s holding up great. Maybe look into those options if you’re worried about longevity.

I love the idea of making our homes more sustainable. I haven’t tried Earth Pigments, but I’ve used another brand of natural clay paint in my kitchen. It’s not the bathroom, but it does get steamy. So far, so good. The texture is unique, and it feels good knowing it’s better for the environment. For colors, I found mixing my own shades was the way to go to get exactly what I wanted.

Just a heads up, applying natural clay paint can be a bit tricky if you’re used to regular paint. It dries faster, so you have to work quickly. I learned that the hard way. But once you get the hang of it, the results are worth it. My bathroom looks amazing, and it’s been over a year with no issues. Definitely recommend giving it a try.

I’m all for eco-friendly options, but I think it’s important to consider the practicality. In my experience, natural clay paint requires more maintenance in high moisture areas. I ended up switching to a different type of paint after a while. It’s great for other parts of the house, though. Maybe do a test patch in your bathroom first to see how it goes.

That’s awesome you’re going the natural route! I haven’t used Earth Pigments, but I’ve heard good things. For colors, I think the beauty of natural paints is in their subtle variations. It might not match your tiles exactly, but it could complement them in a way that’s even better. Plus, the texture adds so much character. Good luck with your project!
