Comparing the durability of eco-chalkboard paint brands: Any long-term users here?

Hey everyone! :herb: I’ve been on a mission to make my home as eco-friendly as possible, and my latest project has been transforming a section of my kitchen wall into a chalkboard for meal planning and grocery lists. I’ve been researching eco-chalkboard paints and came across a couple of brands that caught my eye: EarthPaint and EcoChalk. Both claim to be non-toxic, low-VOC, and made from natural ingredients, which is exactly what I’m looking for.

I’ve previously used BioShield for a different project and was pretty happy with the results, but I’m curious about how these chalkboard-specific options hold up over time. Has anyone here used EarthPaint or EcoChalk for a chalkboard wall or project? How has the durability been? Did it require any special prep or maintenance? I’m especially interested in how it performs on plaster walls, as that’s what I’m working with.

Also, I’d love to hear about any other eco-chalkboard paint brands you’ve tried and your experiences with them. How do they compare in terms of application ease, surface compatibility, and environmental impact? Let’s share our stories and tips to help each other make more informed, sustainable choices for our homes. Looking forward to your insights! :art:

Hey @GreenThumbJenny! I’ve been using EcoChalk for over a year now on a plaster wall in my kid’s playroom. The durability has been impressive! It’s stood up to daily use without any noticeable wear. Application was straightforward, though I did follow the prep instructions to the letter, which included a thorough cleaning and a primer coat. Maintenance-wise, it’s been a breeze. Just a damp cloth for cleaning and it looks as good as new. Highly recommend it for anyone looking for an eco-friendly chalkboard paint option!

I tried EarthPaint for a small project in my home office. While I loved the eco-friendly aspect, I found it didn’t hold up as well as I’d hoped. After about six months, I noticed some areas starting to wear thin, especially where I erased frequently. Maybe it’s just my heavy-handed erasing, but I expected a bit more durability. That said, the application was easy, and it did look great initially. Just something to consider if you’re planning heavy use.

@EcoWarriorSam Thanks for sharing your experience! It’s great to hear that EcoChalk has held up so well over time. Did you find that the primer made a big difference in the application? Also, any tips on the best type of chalk to use with it?

@NatureLover88 That’s interesting to hear about EarthPaint. I wonder if the wear you experienced could be mitigated with a different application technique or an additional protective coat. Has anyone tried applying a sealant over eco-chalkboard paint to enhance durability?

I’ve been on the eco-friendly paint journey for a while now and have tried a few different brands for chalkboard projects. EcoChalk definitely stands out for durability, but I also had a good experience with GreenBoard. It’s a bit less known but offers similar eco-credentials and has held up well on my pantry door. Application was easy, and it’s been low maintenance. Just another option to consider!

@GreenThumbJenny The primer definitely helped with the application, making the surface more uniform and the paint adhere better. As for chalk, I’ve found that softer chalks work best. They’re easier to erase and seem to be gentler on the paint surface. Harder chalks can sometimes leave marks that are tougher to clean off completely.

@DIYQueen That’s a great point about the sealant. I haven’t tried it myself, but it could be a game-changer for extending the life of the paint. If anyone has experience with this, I’d love to hear about it!

Hey @GreenThumbJenny, I’ve been using EarthPaint for my home office chalkboard wall for about two years now. It’s been holding up really well, even with frequent use. I did have to sand the wall lightly before applying, but it was worth the extra step. The paint went on smoothly, and I haven’t noticed any fading or chipping. It’s also been easy to clean with just a damp cloth. Definitely a fan of their eco-friendly approach!

I tried EcoChalk for a small project in my kitchen and was pretty disappointed. It didn’t adhere well to the surface, even after following all the prep instructions. Ended up having to repaint with a different brand. Maybe it was just a bad batch, but I haven’t gone back to try it again.

Just wanted to chime in about BioShield. I know you mentioned you’ve used it before, but I’ve had it on my kids’ chalkboard table for over three years, and it’s still going strong. It’s taken a beating but hasn’t chipped or faded. Plus, the cleanup is super easy. Might be worth considering if you’re looking for something tried and true.

I’m in the middle of deciding between EarthPaint and EcoChalk for my classroom. Hearing mixed reviews here. Does anyone have experience with how these paints perform in high-traffic areas? My classroom walls see a lot of action, and I need something that can withstand daily use without constant touch-ups.

I went with EcoChalk for my home bar’s chalkboard menu and have been really happy with it. It’s been up for about a year, and despite the frequent changes and cleanings, it still looks great. I did use a primer, which I think made a big difference in durability. It’s also held up well to moisture, which was a concern of mine initially.

Interesting to hear about the primer making a difference with EcoChalk. I used EarthPaint without a primer on a drywall surface, and while it’s been durable, I have noticed some areas where the chalk doesn’t wipe off as cleanly as I’d like. Maybe a primer would have helped with that. Has anyone else experienced this with either brand?

I’ve been using EcoChalk for over a year now on a plaster wall in my kitchen, and it’s holding up pretty well. I do a lot of writing and erasing, and while there’s a bit of ghosting, it hasn’t worn thin like you mentioned with EarthPaint. Maybe the difference is in the prep work? I made sure to sand and prime the wall really well before applying the paint.

Interesting to hear about EarthPaint not holding up. I was considering it for my kid’s playroom but now I’m leaning towards EcoChalk. Has anyone tried both on different surfaces? I’m curious if the durability issue is specific to plaster walls or if it’s a general thing with EarthPaint.

I used BioShield for a chalkboard wall in my dining area, and it’s been great. No issues with durability, and it’s been over two years. I wonder if the issue with EarthPaint is more about the specific conditions of your wall or usage rather than the paint itself. Maybe it’s worth giving it another shot with a different prep method?

I haven’t tried EarthPaint or EcoChalk, but I went with Milk Paint for my chalkboard project. It’s super eco-friendly and has held up surprisingly well. The key for me was applying multiple thin coats and letting it cure properly. It might be worth looking into if you’re still exploring options.

I think the key with any eco-chalkboard paint is the curing time. I rushed my first project and it didn’t turn out great. Second time around, I gave it a full week to cure before using it, and the difference was night and day. Maybe EarthPaint just needs more time to set properly?

Has anyone considered the environmental impact of the production process of these paints? I’m all for eco-friendly options, but I wonder how much energy and resources go into making them. It might be worth looking into the companies’ sustainability practices before making a decision.
