Best non-toxic paint options for kitchen cabinets: A beginner's guide

Hey everyone! I’ve been on a mission to make my home more eco-friendly, and my latest project is repainting my kitchen cabinets. I’ve been diving into the world of natural paints, and I’m both excited and a bit overwhelmed by all the options out there. I’ve tried a couple of eco-friendly paints before, like the Earthborn Claypaint for my living room walls, which was a dream to work with, but I’m not sure if it’s the best fit for kitchen cabinets due to the high traffic and grease exposure.

I’m leaning towards trying BioShield or Ecos Paints for this project because I’ve heard great things about their durability and non-toxic formulas. Has anyone used these brands for kitchen cabinets or similar surfaces? I’m particularly curious about how they hold up over time and if there are any specific prep or application tips you’d recommend. Also, if there are other brands or types of natural paint you’ve had success with, I’d love to hear about your experiences!

Lastly, I’m trying to be mindful of the environmental impact, so any insights into the sustainability practices of these brands would be super helpful. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and tips!

I’ve been using BioShield for my kitchen cabinets for about two years now, and I’m really impressed with how well it’s held up. The finish is still as smooth as when I first applied it, and it’s been easy to clean off any grease or food splatters. One tip I’d recommend is to make sure you sand the cabinets well before applying the paint. It really helps with the adhesion and overall finish. Also, BioShield’s commitment to sustainability is a big plus for me. They use natural ingredients and their manufacturing process is eco-friendly.

@GreenThumb99 That’s great to hear about BioShield! I was leaning towards trying it out, and your experience definitely makes me feel more confident about it. Did you use any specific type of BioShield paint for your cabinets? I’ve seen they have a few different options.

@EcoPainter88 I used the BioShield Cabinet & Trim Paint for my project. It’s specifically designed for high-traffic areas and has a durable finish that’s perfect for kitchen cabinets. The application was smooth, and it dried to a nice, even finish. I also appreciated that it’s low VOC and has a minimal odor, which is a big deal for me since I’m sensitive to strong smells.

I haven’t tried BioShield or Ecos Paints yet, but I’ve had a really good experience with Auro Natural Paints for my kitchen cabinets. They offer a range of eco-friendly paints that are made from natural raw materials. The Auro No. 321 is what I used, and it’s held up beautifully against daily wear and tear. It’s also solvent-free and has a very low environmental impact. If you’re exploring options, it might be worth looking into!

@SunnyDaysAhead Thanks for the suggestion! I haven’t come across Auro Natural Paints in my research yet. I’ll definitely check them out. How was the application process? Did you need to do any special prep work?

@EcoPainter88 The application was pretty straightforward. I did the usual prep work—cleaning and sanding the cabinets—but nothing out of the ordinary. The paint went on smoothly, and I was able to achieve a nice, even coat with just two layers. It dried relatively quickly, too, which was a bonus. One thing to note is that the color options are more limited compared to conventional paints, but I found a shade that worked perfectly for my kitchen.

@NatureLover23 I’m also curious about Ecos Paints. From what I’ve read, they have a strong commitment to sustainability and offer a wide range of colors. Hopefully, someone who’s used it for cabinets can share their experience!

I’ve been using Ecos Paints for a while now, not just on my kitchen cabinets but throughout my house. The durability is impressive, especially in high-traffic areas like the kitchen. What I love most is the lack of odor during application, which is a huge plus for me. Their commitment to sustainability is also commendable, with a focus on reducing environmental impact. For anyone considering Ecos, I’d say go for it. Just make sure to follow their prep guidelines closely for the best results.

I tried BioShield on a small project first before committing to my kitchen cabinets, and I’m glad I did. The color options are fantastic, and the paint goes on smoothly. I agree with the tip about sanding; it made a noticeable difference in the finish. Another thing I appreciated was their customer service. They were really helpful when I had questions about the best product for my needs. It’s been a year, and my cabinets still look great. Definitely worth considering if you’re looking for a non-toxic option.

I’ve been down the eco-friendly paint rabbit hole too, and it’s a lot to take in. I haven’t tried Auro Natural Paints, but I’ve heard good things. For my cabinets, I went with Milk Paint from The Real Milk Paint Co. It’s super durable and has this unique, matte finish that really adds character. Plus, it’s made from all-natural ingredients, which was a big win for me. The prep work was a bit more involved, but totally worth it for the end result.

That’s interesting about the Milk Paint. I’ve been curious about it but worried about the durability in a kitchen setting. I ended up using Benjamin Moore’s Natura line for my cabinets. It’s zero VOC and has held up really well against spills and splatters. The application was smooth, and cleanup was a breeze with just soap and water. It’s not as ‘natural’ as some other options, but it’s a good middle ground if you’re looking for something eco-friendly that’s also easy to work with.

I went with Farrow & Ball for my kitchen cabinets. They have a great selection of colors, and their Estate Eggshell finish is perfect for cabinets. It’s durable, easy to clean, and has a beautiful depth of color. They’re also pretty transparent about their environmental practices, which I appreciate. The only downside is the price, but I think it’s worth it for the quality and peace of mind.

Has anyone tried making their own paint? I’ve been experimenting with a mix of chalk, clay, and natural pigments. It’s been a fun project, and I love the idea of knowing exactly what’s going on my walls. The finish is more rustic, which I like, but it might not be for everyone. It’s definitely a labor of love, but I’m curious if others have gone down this path and what your experiences have been.

I haven’t made my own paint, but that sounds like a cool project. I used Sherwin-Williams’ Harmony line for my cabinets. It’s zero VOC and has this anti-microbial thing going on, which is great for the kitchen. The coverage was excellent, and it dried really fast, which was a bonus. I was able to do two coats in one day, and it’s held up really well over the past year. It’s not the most natural option out there, but it’s a solid choice if you’re looking for something low-VOC and durable.

I’m all about the AFM Safecoat products. They’re specifically designed for people with chemical sensitivities, so they’re about as non-toxic as you can get. I used their Acri-Gloss for my cabinets, and it’s been fantastic. It’s water-based, dries quickly, and has a nice, durable finish. The only thing is, the color selection is a bit limited, but if you’re okay with mixing your own, it’s a great option. Their commitment to sustainability is impressive too, which is a big plus for me.

I actually used Ecos Paints for my kitchen cabinets last year and have been pretty happy with the results. The application was smooth, and it dried faster than I expected. The finish has held up well against daily wear and tear, including the occasional splash of oil or sauce. One thing I did notice is that it took a couple of coats to get full coverage, but the end result was worth it. Definitely recommend giving it a try if you’re leaning towards it.

I haven’t tried Ecos Paints on cabinets, but I did use it for a bookshelf project. The color was vibrant and it had a nice, even finish. However, I did find that it was a bit more expensive than some other eco-friendly options I’ve looked at. If budget is a concern, you might want to compare prices with BioShield or even look into some DIY natural paint recipes. They can be a fun project and you might save some money while still keeping things non-toxic.
