Best non-toxic eco-paints for interior concrete walls: A beginner's guide

Hey everyone! :herb: I’ve recently embarked on a journey to make my home more eco-friendly, starting with my interior walls. I live in a loft with exposed concrete walls, and I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect non-toxic, eco-paint that not only looks great but also aligns with my sustainability goals. After some research and a bit of trial and error, I’ve come across a few brands that seem promising, like Earthborn Paints and The Real Milk Paint Co.. Both offer a range of colors and finishes that are perfect for concrete surfaces, and they’re made with natural ingredients that are safe for the environment.

I’ve tried Earthborn’s Claypaint on a small section of my wall, and I’m impressed with its coverage and how it allows the wall to breathe, preventing moisture buildup. The application was smooth, and the matte finish gives a really modern, yet warm look to the space. However, I’m curious about others’ experiences with these or other brands. Have you found a particular eco-paint that works wonders on concrete? How was the application process for you? And importantly, how do you balance aesthetic desires with environmental considerations when choosing paints?

I’d love to hear your thoughts, tips, or any recommendations you might have. Let’s share our experiences and help each other make more informed, eco-conscious choices for our homes!

Hey @GreenThumbJenny, I’ve been down the same path with my concrete walls and ended up choosing The Real Milk Paint Co. for my living room. The application was a bit tricky at first because it’s a powder you mix yourself, but the finish is absolutely stunning. It has this unique, velvety matte look that really complements the industrial vibe of the concrete. Plus, knowing it’s made from all-natural ingredients gives me peace of mind. Have you considered trying their products?

I’m a big fan of Earthborn Paints too! Their Claypaint is fantastic for concrete walls. I used it in my bedroom, and the color depth is incredible. It’s also great for the environment, which is a huge plus. One tip I found useful is to apply a primer first, especially if your walls have any stains or uneven color. It helps the paint adhere better and last longer. @GreenThumbJenny, did you use a primer with your Claypaint?

@SkyRunner45, I haven’t tried The Real Milk Paint Co. yet, but your description of the finish sounds exactly what I’m looking for! The idea of mixing the paint myself is a bit intimidating, but I’m willing to give it a shot for that velvety matte look. Did you find any resources or tips that made the mixing and application process easier?

@EcoWarriorSam, I didn’t use a primer, but now I’m thinking I should have! The coverage was good, but there are a couple of spots where the color isn’t as even as I’d like. Do you have a primer you recommend that’s also eco-friendly?

I’m all about The Real Milk Paint Co. for my projects. It’s a bit more work to mix, but the finish is so unique and it’s completely non-toxic. I used it on my concrete floors and it’s held up really well. For walls, I’d recommend a sealer on top to protect the paint. Anyone else seal their milk paint?

I went with Ecos Paints for my studio space and I’m really happy with the results. They have a wide range of colors and the paint is zero VOC, which was a big deal for me. I didn’t use a primer, but I did clean the walls thoroughly before painting. It’s been a few months and it still looks fresh. Anyone else prioritize zero VOC in their paint choices?

I’ve actually used BioShield Paint for my concrete patio and it turned out great. The application was a bit tricky at first because it’s thinner than regular paint, but once you get the hang of it, the finish is really nice. It’s been a couple of years and it’s holding up well against the weather. Definitely recommend giving it a try for your basement.

I haven’t tried BioShield Paint myself, but I’ve been considering it for my garage. I did a lot of research and it seems like a solid choice for eco-friendly options. I’m curious about the drying time though. If anyone has used it, how long did it take to dry completely? I’m trying to plan out the project timeline.

I used BioShield for my kitchen walls, which are concrete, and I’m really happy with the results. The color stayed vibrant and it’s easy to clean, which is a big plus for me. The only downside was the smell at first, but it went away after a few days. It’s a bit pricey, but I think it’s worth it for the quality and eco-friendliness.
