Best non-toxic eco-paints for interior brick walls: What are your experiences?

Hey everyone! :herb: I’m in the middle of renovating my cozy little cottage and have decided to tackle the interior brick walls next. I’m super passionate about keeping things as eco-friendly as possible, so I’m on the hunt for the best non-toxic, eco-paints out there. I’ve already tried a couple of brands, like Earthborn and Ecos, on different surfaces around the house, and I’ve been pretty impressed with their performance and the minimal environmental impact. But brick? That’s a whole new ball game for me.

I’m curious about your experiences with painting interior brick walls using eco-paints. Specifically, I’m wondering about adhesion and durability on such a porous surface. Have you found any particular brand that works wonders on brick? Also, how did you prepare the surface before painting? I’ve read that cleaning and possibly applying a primer might be necessary, but I’m all ears for any tips or tricks you might have.

Lastly, I’m always on the lookout for paints with the lowest VOC levels and sustainable packaging. If you’ve come across any brands that tick these boxes and have worked well on brick, I’d love to hear about them. Let’s share our experiences and help each other make more informed, eco-conscious choices for our homes. Can’t wait to read your stories and advice!

Hey @GreenThumbJenny! I recently painted my interior brick walls with Auro natural paint, and I must say, the results were fantastic. The key with brick is definitely in the preparation. I started by thoroughly cleaning the walls with a stiff brush and soapy water to remove any dust and soot. After drying, I applied a coat of Auro’s natural primer, which really helped with adhesion. The paint itself has excellent coverage and durability, and it’s virtually VOC-free. Plus, their packaging is fully recyclable, which is a big win for the environment.

Thanks @BrickMaster88! I’ve heard good things about Auro but haven’t tried it yet. How many coats did you end up applying? And did you notice any issues with the paint drying too quickly on the porous brick surface?

@GreenThumbJenny I applied two coats for full coverage. The first coat did dry a bit faster than I expected, but I just made sure to work in smaller sections and keep a wet edge. The second coat went on much smoother. No issues with durability so far, and it’s been a few months!

I’ve had a great experience with Biofa paints on my brick walls. They’re not only eco-friendly but also have a unique, breathable quality that’s perfect for older homes. I didn’t use a primer, just cleaned the walls well, and the paint adhered beautifully. It’s been over a year, and the walls still look fresh. Their low VOC levels and sustainable practices are just the cherry on top.

@EcoWarriorSam That’s awesome to hear! I’ll definitely look into Biofa. Did you find the color selection to be good? I’m aiming for a specific shade of green, and I’m hoping they have something close.

@GreenThumbJenny Their color range is quite extensive, and they offer custom color mixing as well. I went with a deep forest green, and it turned out exactly as I wanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Just chiming in to say I’m also in the process of choosing eco-paint for my brick walls. This thread is super helpful! Does anyone have experience with Lullaby Paints? I’ve read they’re great for kids’ rooms due to their non-toxic formula, but I’m curious about their performance on brick.

@PaintNoob101 I haven’t tried Lullaby Paints on brick, but I used them in my nursery. They’re incredibly safe and have a lovely finish. If they perform well on brick, that would be amazing. Maybe someone else here has experience with them?

I’ve experimented with several eco-paints on brick, and my top pick is Aglaia. Their clay paint is not only eco-friendly but also gives a beautiful, matte finish that really complements the texture of brick. Preparation is key—I recommend using a wire brush to clean the surface and then applying a mineral-based primer. The paint is easy to work with and dries to a durable finish. Plus, their commitment to sustainability is impressive.

@DIYQueen I’ve been curious about Aglaia! How does the clay paint handle moisture? My cottage can get a bit damp, and I want to make sure the paint won’t peel or mold.

@GreenThumbJenny The clay paint is naturally breathable, which helps prevent moisture buildup. In my experience, it’s held up really well in damp conditions without peeling or mold. Just make sure the brick is completely dry before painting, and you should be good to go!

I’ve been down the eco-paint rabbit hole myself and stumbled upon Auro for my brick walls. Their natural paints are something else, really. The key for me was the surface prep; I went the extra mile with a wire brush and a good wash. Skipped the primer, and the paint held up like a champ. It’s been two years, and the color hasn’t faded a bit. Plus, their commitment to sustainability is top-notch. Definitely worth checking out if you’re into minimal environmental impact.

Interesting to hear about Biofa and Auro. I went with Livos for my project. They have this amazing range of colors that just pop on brick. I did use a primer, though, just to be safe. It’s been a game-changer for the adhesion. The walls have this vibrant, almost alive look to them now. And yeah, their eco-credentials are solid. Low VOCs, sustainable sourcing, the works. It’s been a year, and I’m still in love with how it turned out. Maybe something to consider if you’re still on the fence.

Hey, I’ve used Lullaby Paints before, but not on brick. They’re definitely non-toxic and have a nice finish, but I’m not sure how they’d hold up on such a porous surface. Maybe someone else has tried it? I’d be curious to hear about their experience too.

I went with Ecos for my brick walls and it turned out great. The key was really in the prep work. I made sure to clean the bricks thoroughly and used a primer designed for masonry. The paint adhered well and has been durable so far. It’s been a year and no issues.

I haven’t tried Lullaby Paints, but I’ve heard good things. For my brick walls, I used Earthborn and it worked out well. The low VOC levels were a big plus for me. I didn’t use a primer, just made sure the walls were super clean. It’s been holding up nicely.

Just a heads up, when I painted my brick walls, I found that the texture really affects how the paint looks. I used BioShield and loved the eco-friendly aspect, but the rough texture of the bricks made the finish a bit uneven. Something to consider depending on the look you’re going for.

I’m in the same boat, looking for eco-paints for brick. Has anyone tried Auro? I’ve read they have a natural paint specifically for mineral surfaces like brick. Wondering if it’s worth the investment. Also, how many coats did you all need for full coverage?

I’ve had a great experience with Auro paints on my brick walls. They’re natural, breathable, and have a really low VOC content. The key for me was making sure the brick was super clean and dry before applying. I didn’t use a primer, just went straight in with the paint, and it’s held up really well over the years. The finish is matte, which I think looks fantastic on brick.
